How to incorporate a venue’s history into your event

Historic venues are great settings for creating unique event experiences. Taking guests on a journey and telling them a story can be a fun way of incorporating a venue’s history into an event and making something memorable.

Here at the VSC we have over 100 years of history as a military club for service and ex-service personnel and their families and have hosted a range of famous faces, notable figures and politicians from royalty to movie stars. These all shape great stories for events of all genres.

We’ve put together three ways of incorporating a venue’s history into your next event.

Tell the story

Historic venues hold fascinating stories of times past. For example, The Victory Services Club was founded in 1907 by Major Arthur Haggard who had a clear mission: to promote ‘esprit de corps’ within the military, by uniting members of the Armed Forces after he witnessed destitute veterans on London’s streets on his return from the Second Boer War. Use the story to engage with your event audience. You could even invite a speaker related to the history of the venue to be a keynote.

Theme the event

Historic venues provide the perfect opportunity to be creative with your event theming. Whether its dressing the venue using its history as inspiration or incorporating the history into a dress code or event topic, there are many ways of working with the history to create an exciting theme.

Play with historic catering concepts

Event theming can include everything from the décor to the food. You could take your event theming one step further by designing food that takes its inspiration from the venue’s past. From historic menus to food designed around the architecture of the venue there’s lots of ways to make it quirky and unique for guests.
