Sustainability is a hot topic right now and most businesses are working hard to reduce their carbon footprint in whatever ways they can. The events industry is no different. The Meeting Industry Association recently launched a campaign encouraging the meetings and events industry to use less single-use plastic and countless venues, organisers and suppliers are coming up with innovative ways to be kinder to the environment.
The Victory Services Club recently won the Hospitality Assured Excellence in Sustainability award. The award recognises the highest quality levels of service, operations and management within the hospitality sector and is testament to the fact that sustainability plays an important role in our day-to-day business and is something we are incredibly passionate about.
These are some of the initiatives we are currently working on as part of our sustainable framework:Increased recycling and centralised waste collection
Increased recycling and centralised waste collection
By centralising collection points for waste and recyclables, we endeavour to capture more recycling than the traditional recycling set-up. We have also made small changes to reduce our plastic waste within the F&B department by no longer stocking plastic drinking straws and by utilising plant-based catering disposables made from renewable, lower carbon or recycled materials, that can all be commercially composted with food waste.
Reduction in bedroom soap and toiletry waste going to landfill
We work with a company called Clean Conscience that helps hotels and toiletry manufacturers achieve environmental sustainability, by significantly reducing the amount of soap and toiletry waste going to landfill. Clean Conscience recycles and repurposes this waste through a number of community engagement activities to get soap and hygiene products to those most in need.
Eco-friendly cleaning products
At the start of this year we moved all our chemical products to Innuscience. Innuscience produces non-solvent, ecologically certified cleaning products which are concentrated and long lasting and kinder to the environment than more traditional brands.
Sustainable products
We have also embarked on a journey of sourcing sustainable products and these include sustainable Christmas crackers, recyclable conference pens and zero carbon impact wines.
